Support PT/OT/SLP Interprofessional Service Learning Program in Guatemala
Graduate students in Sacred Heart University’s physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language-pathology programs annually travel to Guatemala in October. There is minimal access to these therapies in Guatemala, especially in the villages the group travels to. The mission of this service learning program is to work with local partners to assess need and provide services to underserved communities. This is done in a variety of settings, including local schools for children with disability and hearing impairments, musculoskeletal clinics, and home visits. In addition, one of the faculty leaders is an audiologist and has begun to provide these services as well.
Students fund their own travel expenses, but they must also fund the supplies and equipment necessary to provide care. Every dollar donated through this campaign will directly contribute to the provision of those supplies and equipment needs. Should the campaign exceed goal, all funds will be held in reserve for the following service learning program.
We hope that alumni, family, and friends will consider supporting this dedicated group of SHU students and allow them to make a difference in the lives of many Guatemalans.
Funding to help provide a custom Guatemalan wheelchair to a child or adult.
Funding to support a full year's tuition for one student at a special needs school.
